July 29, 2007 Britain’s Met Office reported that England had suffered its wettest July on record. Some 129mm (5.07in) of rain fell up to July 29, beating the previous record of 126.5mm (4.98in) set in 1936. The average rainfall across the whole of the UK was 135.7mm (5.34in), 95 percent higher than the long-term average of 69.6mm (2.74in), making it the second wettest on record. July 29, 2004 British-born scientist Francis Crick, who with American colleague James Watson helped to discover the double helix structure of DNA, died at the age of 88. Crick and Watson unveiled their model of the double helix at Cambridge University in 1953 and were later awarded the Nobel Prize for their work. Their landmark scientific paper, published in the journal “Nature” in 1953, began with an unassuming pair of sentences: "We wish to suggest a structure for the salt of deoxyribose nucleic acid (DNA).
